I keep an old Windows system running for Blue Iris. (Wish they had a Linux version...)
I had Zoneminder working well for a while, but it's kinda clunky and device discovery is hit and miss. The interface is light years behind BI, but if you're willing to take the time to get it configured, Zoneminder is actually pretty capable. Zoneminder could look much, much nicer if they took some time to tweak the CSS.

I bought a copy BI to see if it was any good, and after a couple of weeks I decided to use it instead of Zoneminder.

I use three windows 10 machines here at the house. For my study desktop, where BI resides, I use a Ryzen 2950X Threadripper with 64Gb of memory. In have a 2tb NVMe SSD as my primary storage and 2 6tb spinning disks onboard. I backup to a Synology 12 bay NAS currently populated with 8 10tb WD Reds. With Raid 6 I get about 55Tb of usable storage, 20Tb are dedicated to BI. I do a nightly backup to my son's house via VPN to his NAS.
