Hi,

currently i have 4x C800 Annke 4K cams and Annke NVR. sadly this nvr is limited and its not allowed to use it in a subnet.

now im looking for a better nvr. i want record 24/7 with maybe 5-7 cams maximum.

i want record in 4k and maybe h265+. i dont know how much space this take, but i want record minimum 1 month. alternative i record in low quality and on movement in 4k stream. if its possible to do it like 5minute pre and 5min after movement.

i guess i will install the AI plugin later, for better notification. notification would be nice if this works with smarthome system like iobroker. i think this should work via mqtt.

next, iam lookin for less power consumation. because of 24h recording.

i have alreade some 4tb WD red harddrives, from my old nas, i want use them if possible.

ok thats my facts, now i hope someone can suggest me a "perfect" system for blueiris with the above hints.

Maybe something with a little more ooomph, but you get the idea. I built my BI box from parts because I got a super deal on a spare CPU from a friend, but these days I'd go with a refurb- just make sure it has enough CPU to handle the load. (You can always add memory but typically 16Gb is plenty.) Hard drives are cheap, but a 1Tb drive should be fine to start out with.

There are tons of inexpensive boxes on eBay that would fit the bill, a little browsing will find some suitable candidates.

do i need ssd for windows to boot? i think i boot it once or reboot after problems. but its on 24/7

do you know how much elecritity i need or how much this cost per year, round about ?

You can certainly run an i5 processor or a Xeon server grade CPU. An i7 is just more cores than an i5 and Blue Iris if anything is CPU hungry. I don't think a Core2duo is going to be a good experience BUT..... if you have it, there really is no harm in trying it. It might end up being miserable in which case, export your config, deactivate the license, and move to a more powerful system.

SSD not required of course, but for the intensive read/write and speed, it's not a bad idea. I do not have an SSD myself but I'm running RAID across a pretty big array of disks so I get it in another way. The choice is yours of course.

Electricity requirements are very subjective to a lot of things and I think would be very difficult to estimate. You'd have to get into the weeds of the properties of your PSU as well as even little details like RAM speed, hard drive type, all of which can affect power draw. Expect to run a computer at average (not idle) performance around the clock. Beyond that, you're looking at the initial cost of the Blue Iris license and then approximated $30 US per year to renew (which is a bargain based on the development efforts). Any other costs after that depend on what toys (cameras, switches, etc) you buy to go with your system.

If you do the math, spindle disks are just fine for video recorders. My BI system confirms this.

I have other virtual machines that I tinker with where the speed of an SSD is very noticeable. Not BI though.

Booting the computer is very much helped by SSD.

I suppose I would actually go with SSD but don't use BI requirements as the basis of that decision.

No, it doesn't have to be an I7 but a more powerful CPU is always better in my experience. There's no real downside to having a faster CPU that I can think of.

SSDs: I've converted almost everything I own to use SSDs, mostly for speed but also for resilience- one good bump and most spinning hard disks will crash with disastrous results. SSDs also have very good life expectancy these days so the "wear and tear" factor is no longer something to worry about.

As for electricity we're probably talking a few dollars a year depending on your local rates. I never even thought about that; it's not a consideration for me.

With those specs it sounds like it should work just fine. If you can get a little snappier CPU for not too much extra $$ then I'd go for it, but what you specced below seems like should work for 5 ~ 7 cameras.

I agree, that system should work just fine. I'd always recommend (as Thixo did) to just shop around a bit to get the best CPU bang for your buck. All other specs are more than sufficient but the CPU listed should be just fine too!

And yes, BI supports using network storage, second drives, whatever pretty much. It's flexible.
